WooCommerce Shipping in South Africa: Couriers and Setup
Set up WooCommerce shipping in South Africa: The Courier Guy plugin vs Bob Go, live rates vs flat rates, PUDO lockers, and the settings that break quotes.
Your WooCommerce store has products and a payment gateway. Now parcels need to reach customers without you over- or under-charging for delivery. WooCommerce shipping in South Africa comes down to two decisions: use one courier's own plugin or an aggregator that covers several couriers, and show live courier rates at checkout or a flat rate. Then get a handful of unglamorous settings right, because that is where shipping quotes quietly break.
This sits alongside the payment side of checkout. If you have not set up your store yet, start with how to start an online store in South Africa.
The Courier Guy plugin vs Bob Go: which should you use?
The two routes most South African stores choose between:
- A single courier's plugin, such as The Courier Guy's. It needs a Courier Guy account with credit, and the plugin will not work correctly if the account has no credit [1]. Simple if you only ever ship with one courier.
- An aggregator, such as Bob Go. One account covers several couriers: its delivery partners include The Courier Guy, Internet Express, SkyNet, RAM, Fastway, Pargo and its own Bob Box lockers [2]. It also generates shipping labels with one click and supports VAT-inclusive shipping rates [2].
One recent change to know about. The older uAfrica shipping plugin was permanently closed on 28 July 2026 [3], and the current Bob Go plugin is a complete rewrite that migrates existing settings automatically when you upgrade from it [2]. If a guide sends you to the uAfrica plugin, it is out of date.
In my experience, one courier's plugin suits a store with steady, similar parcels and one trusted courier. An aggregator suits a store that wants to compare prices, offer lockers and print all labels in one place.
Live rates at checkout or a flat rate?
WooCommerce organises all shipping into shipping zones: regions you define, each with its own delivery methods such as flat rate, free shipping or a courier's live rates. Each customer matches only one shipping zone, the first one their address fits [4].
- Live rates: the courier quotes the real price for that address and parcel at checkout. Accurate and protects your margin, but depends on the courier's system responding and on your product data being right.
- Flat rate: one price, or a few by region. Simple and predictable for customers, but you will over-charge some orders and under-charge others.
- Free shipping above a set amount: a good nudge to bigger baskets, as long as you set the threshold deliberately from your margins rather than copying a competitor.
Live rates at checkout are now an established pattern for South African stores. Bob Go lets you set the rates charged to buyers at checkout [2], and larger logistics providers such as DSV also offer WooCommerce integrations with live delivery rates and automatic shipment creation [6].
PUDO lockers and cheaper delivery options
Lockers and pickup points are where South African shipping differs most from the foreign guides. Customers often prefer collecting from a locker at a petrol station or mall to waiting at home for a courier.
- The Courier Guy plugin added locker delivery options based on the customer's delivery city [1].
- Bob Go can let customers choose a locker or counter pickup point when one is available within their address radius [2].
- Pudo pricing was reported as starting at R60 for locker-to-locker delivery up to 5 kg, or R70 for locker-to-door, with about 1,500 lockers nationally [5].
- Paxi store-to-store delivery through Pep was reported from R59.95 for 7 to 9 working days, and Aramex store-to-door from R99 for small parcels [5].
Those courier prices come from a December 2024 comparison, so treat them as indicative and get a current quote from each courier before you set your own rates.
The pitfalls that break WooCommerce shipping
Most shipping problems I see on WooCommerce stores are settings, not the plugin:
- Zones in the wrong order. Zones should run from the smallest area to the largest [4]. If "South Africa" sits above "Gauteng", the Gauteng rate is never used.
- A zone with no methods. If an address falls in a zone without shipping methods, the customer is told no shipping is available [4], and the sale is lost.
- Missing weights and sizes. Incorrect parcel size settings can make quotes inaccurate, and every product needs correct dimensions and weights [1].
- An outdated plugin. The Courier Guy plugin's support for WooCommerce's newer block checkout and lockers came in recent versions [1], so stay updated.
I recommend always keeping a flat-rate method as a fallback inside each zone, so that if live rates fail for any reason, checkout still offers a way to pay. I build and run WooCommerce stores, including my own and client stores such as Brother Elite SA, and in my experience checkout is where small settings cause the biggest losses. More on that in why affordable WooCommerce sites break at checkout.
One POPIA note: a shipping integration sends customer details to the courier. Bob Go's own disclosure lists the customer name, email, phone, addresses and order details among what is sent to its system [2]. Mention your couriers in your privacy notice, and get professional advice on your obligations.
“If the quote at checkout looks wrong, check your zones and product weights before you blame the courier.”
Shipping and payment are the two halves of a working checkout, so test them together. My guide to setting up a WooCommerce payment gateway covers the other half.
What to do next
- Choose your route: one courier's plugin, or an aggregator such as Bob Go, and open the account.
- Add accurate weights and dimensions to every product before switching on live rates.
- Create your shipping zones from smallest to largest, each with a live-rate method and a flat-rate fallback.
- Set a free-shipping threshold based on your margins, if you offer one.
- Place test orders to a few real suburbs, including a locker option, and check the quotes.
If your shipping quotes are wrong or customers are hitting "no shipping available", get in touch and I will sort out the setup.
